About us

I’m Albert Sala, and I’m part of the third generation of a family business that has always been dedicated to growing ornamental plants. My grandfather, Luis, started in the 1960s. In the 1970s, my father and uncle joined the business, and in the early 2000s the third generation arrived: my cousins Lluís and Marc, and me, Albert. We continue striving to move the business forwards, with the clear objective of continuing to innovate as much as we can.

I have lived alongside this business since my childhood, and I started working at the business at a very young age. I took a break to complete my university studies in management and finance, and once I graduated I returned to the business.

Why did you decide to go into the family business?

I mainly decided to dedicate myself to the family business because it has always been part of my life, and I liked it. I like the cultivation of ornamental plants in its essence, and as a business. As well as the excitement of growing as a business. What’s more, we have specialized within the sector and this gives us the opportunity to work in our own way, which we like.

My father and uncle still work at the company. They are pre-retired, and they are leaving the bigger decisions to us.

What was the
first thing you changed? Why?

The first thing we changed with the third generation, was the production method. We chose a more mechanized and innovative production method. Just like my uncle and my father, we have chosen to cultivate the species that make us stand out in the sector. We also offered a new way of relating to our customers by creating, for example, an experimental garden at our nursery. This serves both as a test site and as a display for landscapers and gardening professionals. Moreover, we’ve provided a more specialized way of working, seeking out more technical and specialized professional profiles that have contributed to improving our competitiveness. Therefore, since we’ve been in charge, specialization and innovation have been the focus of the business.

What advice would you give to others who are considering to join or take over the family business?

I would advise anyone to do whatever really motivates them. It's very important for me to wake up in the morning and know that I'm going to enjoy what I'm going to do. You can get this feeling with a family business, like in my case, or it can come from any other area of work.

For those who, like me, are motivated and feel comfortable working in a family environment and doing their bit to make the family business work, of course I would encourage them to do so, because it is very rewarding.

What does the future hold?

We have a very good team at Sala Graupera, with very capable young technicians, who are helping us move the company forward.

And my dream is that this team of professionals, who make Sala Graupera a leading company in the sector, will continue to be associated with our company for many years to come, and will also be able to grow professionally alongside with us. This is the most gratifying thing for an entrepreneur – seeing their business and employees form a team, and that this team achieves its goals every time.
